Recap: Doctor Who "Aliens of London"

The first season of the Revived Series of Doctor Who gave us a two-parter that would end up winning a Hugo Award for “Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.” That’s no small feat.

But before I can get to that two-parter, I have to slog through this two-parter.

The first three episodes of this season form a rather loose, mostly thematic three-parter in order to introduce the audience to what they could expect from the series. The next two episodes, however, are a two-part conglomeration of things that people never want to see in Doctor Who again. Ever.

Be glad that the suits already ordered another season after “The End of the World” was broadcast, because this two-parter would have put the show back down the crapper.

Which is pretty fitting, considering the main source of “humor” in this episode.

Recap/Review: Gotham Girls "I'm Badgirl"

I really don't know what the official title of this episode is. Some sources show it with a strike through "Bat" as well, making it "I'm BatBadgirl." Some, not all. And the title screen shows it like this.

Ain't no font renders a crossed out word, Gotham Girls! How am I supposed to type this?

All I know for sure is that this is the last episode of Season 2. Let's begin.

Fun Fact: Allegedly, this was the first movie to use “slime” as a verb. And yet, my phone spellchecker refuses to accept the word “slimed” as a word. What the heck.

And so, Judgment Day arrives. You know, odds are, should the armies of heaven arrive to usher the righteous humans to Heaven in some kind of Rapture, some poor fool's literally going to be caught with his pants down. Poor guy.

And that's why you should always wear clean underwear. You never know when the Rapture will strike.

And so, about a third into the movie, our team gets ready to bust their first ghost, despite being oh-fer.

Actually, wait, whatever happened to the library ghost? Why don't they practice their busting on her?

Eh, she probably finished her book and went back to Hell until George R.R. Martin published A Song of Ice and Fire.

Well, let's get this Recap started, then.

Recap: "Ghostbusters" Intro

Ghostbusters was, and still is, a pop culture phenomenon. Odds are, you’ve probably seen the movie. Or at the very least, you’ve heard of it. It’s very hard to predict what things will make a lasting dent in pop culture.

Let’s just take the 90’s, for instance.

Furbys? Tamagotchi? Made a huge impact for a brief time. Today, they’re pretty much ignored by anyone who didn’t grow up with them.

Batman: The Animated Series? Generally well-regarded, then and now.

Toy Story? A franchise that stood the test of time with two sequels released as of this year and another on the way. And who could have predicted such a hit from a company that specialized in making Listerine commercials?

Ghostbusters is a similar underdog story. By all rights, the film as we know it should not have been made for a large number of reasons. I mean, seriously, it’s a miracle we ended up with such a good movie, when you look at all the differences from the original vision. A good movie that spawned a sequel film, a few video games (including a single good one), numerous cartoons, a few comic book series, and an upcoming (as of the time of this writing) reboot. An upcoming reboot that I have chosen not to discuss for the time being, mainly because even mentioning the movie seems to be inviting a flame war. So for now, all I will say about the upcoming reboot is that I’m keeping an open mind, I think the hood ornament on the Ecto-1 is a nice touch, and I’m cautiously optimistic.

With that out of the way, it’s time to take a look at the series of unlikely events that gave birth to one of the most beloved films to come out of the 80’s.

Top Ten Armors of Iron Man 3

The attack of the Iron Legion. One of the most fist-pumpingly-awesome moments in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. About thirty armors on screen at once, each one with a unique look and function. Well, actually, that’s a bit of a lie. Several armors are variations on the same theme. There are a couple armors with arm attachments, a couple meant for withstanding radiation, a couple meant for stealth, et cetera.

But still, when I first took it upon myself to go through the MCU wiki and look at each and every armor, this was my reaction.

Review: "Iron Man 3" Part 2: The Anti-Superhero Movie

You know, I originally mentioned that I liked Iron Man 3 the first year of this blog. I got no flak for it because, well, no one was reading this. And as of yet, I’ve gotten no flak for liking Iron Man 3 as I’ve posted this… probably because I have very few readers. And they’re all very polite people who know how to have a reasonable discussion on the internet. For which I’m forever grateful. Especially now that I’m about to explain why I like this movie so much.

Still, I realize that I'm turning myself into a target. But you know what?

Deal with it.

As far as the internet arguments would have you believe, Iron Man 3 simply ends at the big twist regarding the Mandarin. Not because there are people on the internet actually saying this, but because any discussion of the movie inevitably gets sidetracked at this point. But because I’m saving everything I have to say about that twist for its very own post, I’ll be moving on to see exactly how Tony gets out of this particular scrape.

Ten bucks says it has something to do with armor. Any takers?

Thanks to forgetting to actually post an explanation for my absence, it was probably as if I had just disappeared from the face of the Earth for the past couple weeks. But in a way, that’s kind of appropriate, as Tony Stark now finds himself in the same position.

January 2016 Announcements... and Apologies

Happy New Year!

So... you may have noticed that the various parts to my Iron Man 3 Recap haven't gone up in a while.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and it was pretty unprofessional of me to leave you all hanging like that. Well, thing is, I typed up a quick explanation and an apology beforehand to let you guys know that I would be taking a short break to spend time with family. And then forgot to actually post it.

Whoops.

So I'm sorry for the unexpected hiatus and especially sorry for the lack of information about it.

Iron Man 3 resumes next week (for realsies), and the schedule will be updated soon to let you all know what to expect during this month.
