Sketchbook: Reaper Redesign

In my Recap and Review of the Doctor Who episode "Father's Day," I mentioned how disappointed I was in the monsters of that episode, the Reapers. Meaning I had the perfect excuse to bring back Redesigns to the NewtCave after two years!

Because when I think "Grim Reaper," I think... bats?
As always, I gave myself a few rules.
  1. Keep the brown leathery skin.
  2. Keep the general design of the mouth.
  3. Keep the scythes.
  4. Make it look more like its namesake without making it look overtly humanoid.
Here's what I came up with.

100% less bat, 50% more teeth.
Though the Reapers were designed to look like sharks, I took inspiration from jellyfish, which I merged with the Grim Reaper's basic silhouette. I decided to make the mouth look more nightmarish and hood-like, and I thought it would look neat if you could see the time vortex within the shadows of their insides. At the very least, I think it looks more otherworldly.

Well, there you have it. Do you have any requests for any future redesigns? Feel free to leave a comment or tweet to @NewtCave!

  1. Pretty good, the teeth remind me of the Langoliers, fittingly enough

    1. Ah, yes, I forgot to mention. The teeth were inspired by Jorgandr, a boss in one of those non-canon Game Boy Final Fantasy games.
